My poor mother Lily would try to give us a “Saturday sixpence”, as she used to call it. By the time I was 11, my sister Linda started work in the corner shop, and a year later I got a job with Johnny delivering milk. Then he got a paraffin round and I did that too. It was the only way I could buy records, clothes and second-hand books. It never entered my mind that there was any alternative.
